Frozen desserts out, milk-based ice creams in: Kwality Wall’s big India bet

Listening to the Indian consumers’ shifting preferences and their growing tilt towards healthier choices, Kwality Wall’s has said that it will completely revamp its frozen desserts business in the country by next year.

Kwality Wall’s global chief executive Peter ter Kulve has told the Economic Times that the company is shifting its entire product range from vegetable oil-based frozen desserts to milk-based ice cream products. This is because Indian consumers consider milk-based ice creams as having better quality and nutrition.

According to ter Kulve, the brand is taking a conscious decision to position itself as a fully dairy-based ice cream business, as India has become the company’s biggest strategic market.

It may be noted that Kwality Wall’s has already launched several milk-based ice cream products as part of the transition.

The chief executive told the newspaper exclusively that while around half of the products will transition to become dairy-based this year itself, the remaining will make the shift next year.

“We are not a frozen dessert company anywhere in the world. We are an ice cream company,” ter Kulve said.

The company is also increasing its manufacturing capacity in the country while also strengthening distribution and cold-chain infrastructure.

Kwality Wall’s also stated that several of the products will see price cuts, while some other locally relevant offerings like kulfi and kesar bhog will also be made available.

India’s has one of the world’s largest ice cream market by volume, pegged at around $2 billion.
