As AI-generated content and fake accounts flood social media platforms, Meta has taken a big step to deal with the issue and protect its users.
The leading global technology company has announced the launch of Facebook Verified, a free verification badge for personal profiles.
The badge is aimed at distinguishing between real users and fake profiles on the popular social media platform.
A Facebook user can get the Facebook Verified badge by uploading a short video selfie as part of the selfie-based verification process. The video selfie is matched against the user’s existing profile photos to confirm the identity and issue the badge.
Meta said the process does not entail any cost, take a few minutes to complete, and can be used by any Facebook user above 18 years of age whose account complies with the Community Standards of the platform.
Facebook Verified is different from the existing Meta Verified subscription feature, and is available to only personal profiles. It cannot be used for Pages or by ProMode accounts.
The verified badge will initially appear across marketplace, dating, groups and user profiles, while feed posts will get it in the future.
Meta, however, added that the badge is not an endorsement or a guarantee of a user’s trustworthiness, stating that all such accounts will continue to come under the purview of the company’s Community Standards and Commerce Policies.
